How cone rolling works
A cone starts as a curved sector-shaped blank. Its outer arc forms the wider end and its inner arc forms the narrower end. As the blank passes through tapered rolls, the different roll diameters guide the sheet into a taper. A series of controlled passes forms the curve; the seam can then be closed and finished to suit the application.
1. Develop the blank
Choose the large and small end diameters and the finished cone height, then lay out a sector-shaped blank for the required taper.
2. Form progressively
Feed the blank through the rolls in stages and check the taper as it develops. Small diameter and thicker material reduce the practical capacity.
3. Check the finished shape
Allow for seam preparation and joining. Trial a sample where finish or fit matters, and confirm the machine is within capacity before rolling.
Capacity limit: full pointed cones are recommended up to 0.5 mm mild steel. Up to 1.0 mm mild steel is for suitable larger-diameter open-ended cone work. The actual limit depends on cone diameter and material.
